When I Saw You (2012) — Annemarie Jacir

Dear You,

We passed the holy month, once more. Your holy month.

It never occurred to me that we have to celebrate the holy month like this. In this situation, earth is still ill, the people are still dying. By the way, I’m okay, if You asked me. I was going to asked how do You do, but I know You’re okay. You always do. I mean, I know for a fact You are in much more comfortable place and Heaven surely is better than anywhere on earth right now. This place, You long time ago created with an immense beauty and potential before we corrupt it, before we violate it until Your given beauty was no more. I wonder why You created such a destroyer. Maybe You should have never created us in the first place. If we ever meet one day (which I doubt but, I’m still hopeful) I’d like to ask you personally about

what kind of creature, who smoke their brothers while they are in their prayers, in the most sacred place known to be the home of You.

What kind of creature who robbed an innocent land, claimed it as theirs and stomp on its entire population like they are a dirt under a pair of boots?

Perhaps I won’t ever get an answer. Perhaps, You Yourself would not want to answer for You never created such an evil. Maybe You wondered the same thing too.

But, if this letter somehow finds You, through whatever way possible, I want you to know that I am safe and sound, like I said, I am okay. In fact, I am now surrounded with a loving family, sheltered by the most protecting roof, sleep in the most comfortable bed, stomach full of warm and delicious meal, which I am eternally grateful. But I still ache, I ache for the children in a country across the continent with no roof to shelter let alone a loving family, children who have to watch the agonizing death of their parents. I ache for the cry of fathers and mothers who have to dig graves for their children, I ache for the people who have to live under a mercy of a gun point.

You,

In a mosque not far from where I live, they call upon Your greatness, upon Your mercy, upon Your help. It’s never sound more soothing, the call I recite when I am in hardship, Because once, if not many times, You said,

Be and it is

You, the only being who hold such a power to end of all difficulties in the world. You hold their entire destiny like strings in Your palm, You threaded it, so, when will you pull the string and end it once and for all? We sin, I know. We made mistakes, we are all guilty to You. But I believe this is not how You punish us, for we always beg for Your forgiveness, for You are the most gracious and the most merciful.

So, I am too, calling You,

to put this to an end. Put out the stress in the land of Palestine.

Eid Mubarak to You, and the people of Palestine, may them who fall in a battle to protect their land and freedom granted the most beautiful place in heaven amongst You.

Ps;

welcome and thank you for reading, I include link in which you can donate for the children in Palestine, as well as a petition to stop Jerusalem expulsions. Worry not, the donation is funded by a legitimate non-profit organization who focus on the safe and wellbeing of middle east children who get affected by war crisis.

Eid Mubarak to you kind people and stay safe wherever you are in the world.
